A Trip to the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News, VA

Discover the wonder of the natural world at the Virginia Living Museum (VLM), located in Newport News, VA. This fantastic facility provides visitors the opportunity to explore such a vast range of wildlife that it is hard not to be in awe of the magic of nature. VLM is home to more than 200 species of plants, animals, reptiles, and more––all housed in replicas of natural habitats. The beautiful location also includes a planetarium, which adds to the experience. All in all, a visit to the VLM is like no other––with an abundance of exciting activities, both indoors and outdoors. The living museum began in 1966 as a nature center in City Park and has since grown to encompass 79 acres inside Newport News Park. The Virginia Living Museum is divided into five distinct zones – Marine and Aquatic, Earth, Frontier, Conservation, and Live Animal presentations. Each zone includes numerous exhibitions and interactive displays, special exhibits, and gardens. Explore the outdoor gardens and scenic nature trails, or learn some new skills by taking part in one of VLM's workshops. There is even an adventure playground for kids. One of the museum’s most impressive features is the Touch of Nature Discovery Room, a collection of 10 differently-themed habitat replicas designed to mimic natural environments. See the animals in their natural living spaces and learn about reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and more. Learn about the balance of nature and the importance of conservation through fun and educational activities. For a chance to explore the outer reaches of the universe, make sure to check out the Abbitt Planetarium. This interactive theater features visitors the latest full-dome digital projection shows, as well as laser light shows. Marvel at the stars as you explore the night sky, as you learn about galaxies far away. If you’re looking for a little family-friendly fun, look no further than the Naturalist's Cabin, located on the grounds of the VLM.
